Text Box: Cultural shock and International Students

Travelling away from home to study in a new country can be a stressful occurrence. Even though it may be something you have planned and prepared for, the scope of the transform and the effects it has on you can catch you by surprise. If you find that you are surprised by the effects of the change, it might be helpful to comprehend that your experience is quite normal. This is relevant whatever country you come from, and wherever you are going to study, even though some cultures are more analogous than others because of geographic, historic, demographic and other connections.

Some of the indications of culture shock can be perturbing themselves. For instance, you may find your health is affected and you may get headaches or tummy aches or you may start worrying about your health more than previously. You may find it complicated to concentrate and as a result find it harder to focus on your studies and normal activities. Some people find they become more irritable or tearful and generally their emotions seem more changeable. All of these effects can in themselves add to your anxiety.

Although culture shock is usually a transitory phase, it is important to know there are things you can do to help so that some of these distressing effects can be minimised. Don’t feel “this isn’t going to happen to me”. Culture shock can strike you whatever culture you come from and however experienced or well-travelled you are.
Merely accepting that this is a normal experience may in itself be helpful. Keep in touch with home. There are several ways you may be able to do this: for example telephone, letter, fax, email. Several telephone companies offer greatly reduced charges for international calls. If you live close enough to travel home at weekends, it is a good idea not to go home too often as this will make settling more difficult.

Chandani By Ram Lal Shrestha

Despite the place, That I'm now in,
This corner of my life, That tells where I've been...

Despite the set backs, That I face,
Or of the tears, That leaves a trace...

Despite the time, That distance brings,
Or life's little quirks, And all other things,

Despite that fact, That I still live, Ram Lal Shrestha, Student
Memories of a past, I can't forgive… MBA in Financial and Computers Mgt’

Despite the rains, That floods the trail,
Despite life's winds, A force of gale...
Despite the moon, Laying hidden behind,
The tracks I time, Within my mind,
Despite harsh words, Whispered aloud,
Or of the sun, Behind the clouds,
Despite the way, Life comes about,
My love for you, There is no doubt...!!

It is not possible to create a folder called con on the desktop of Windows XP. CON is a reserved word in Microsoft’s First OS MSDOS and still has remained a reserved word in Windows XP. Try to create a folder called con on Windows XP and simply will not let you do it.

NB: Please check the answer in the next month’s newsletter. However you can post your answer by clicking here. First 3 students with the correct answer will get £100 discount each on their course fee balance. We must receive the answer by 15 November 2008.

Exam Preparation and Techniques

The examination could be daunting and very stressful. However if you plan your revision properly ahead it would make your life a lot easier.

We have put on some of the important revision techniques from BPP revision kit for you to follow.

Plan your revision
You should draw up a timetable to plan how long you will spend on each subject and how you will revise each area.

Practise
The more exam-standard questions you do, the more you are likely to pass the exam.
Practising full questions will mean that you’ll get used to the time pressure of the exam.

Revise enough
Make sure that your revision covers the breadth of the syllabus, as in most papers most topics could be examined in a compulsory questions.

Deal with your difficulties
Difficult areas are topics you find dull and pointless, or subjects that you found problematic when you were studying them. You mustn’t become negative about these topics: instead you should build up your knowledge by doing further research on the topic.

Learn from your mistakes
Having completed a question you must try to look at your answer critically. Look at easy marks to see how you could have quickly gained credit on the questions you have done.
